Seek Ye First Sermon - Pastor Steve Winter

These are my notes for tonight's 2/7/2002 Sermon "Seek ye first".
I have uploaded the audio to http://www.apostolic.biz/audio

Matthew 6:19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where
moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth
nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor
steal:
21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be
single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of
darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how
great is that darkness!
24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one,
and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the
other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye
shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye
shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than
raiment?
26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they
reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them.
Are ye not much better than they?
27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?
28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the
field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:
29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was
not arrayed like one of these.
30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day
is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more
clothe you, O ye of little faith?
31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What
shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your
heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and
all these things shall be added unto you.

Matthew 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God
with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

Mark 12:30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart,
and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy
strength: this is the first commandment.

Luke 10:27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God
with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength,
and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.

1 Peter 4:18 And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the
ungodly and the sinner appear?

Think (and pray) about that! Even those who do the right things
right will barely make it. And this was written to people who have
obeyed Acts 2:38 warning them/us. Many in Oneness Churches will not
be saved because of their sin.

2 Timothy 3:1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times
shall come.

We live in perilous times.

Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but
against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the
darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Consider the wickedness in even the United Pentecostal Church
International leadership that they allow the corruption in the
Connecticut district among their other sin, and the reprobate UPC
preacher who had led several "dimbulbs" into the sewers of sin with
him.

Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

To some, their position in their organization has become an idol god
to them.

Ezekiel 14:3 Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their
heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their
face: should I be enquired of at all by them?

An "idol" need not be some external thing. For some it is their
career (not that we are to be slothful in whatever business we
pursue, and to work "as to the Lord".), for some it is their bank
account, for some a car, for others a sinful lifestyle, for others a
sport, for others a drink, for others drugs, etc and etc.... Anything
that a man puts above God in his life is an IDOL IN HIS HEART.

John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and
to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might
have it more abundantly.

Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden,
and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly
in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

The true, faithful Christian life is the life of true freedom! For
those who really put God and His Word first in their life, they
receive the benefits at very low cost.

But there is another frustrating scenario, one cannot ride the fence
between good and evil. I think of one of the dimbulbs that was led
into sin by the aforementioned UPC preacher. He started out just
wanting to be friends with everyone and
decided to be "neutral" about that preacher's sin. Well it hasn't
taken the devil long to give that sinner man a complete makeover.

James 1:6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that
wavereth is like a
wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the
Lord.
8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

So many are so frustrated in their efforts to be "Christian" because
they are double minded. They know that they have sin in their life,
but they never will give themselves 100% to God to have power over
these things. They have enough commitment to feel guilty but not
enough to overcome.

If Church is worth attending at all, then you need to give God
PRIORITY in your life and you need to be there every service (if you
can do so and still meet other real responsibility). Obviously there
are people like doctors, nurses, public safety
officers and others whose time is not really their own, but even
they, if they are not working need to attend every service.

Proverbs 13:15 Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of
transgressors is hard.

The committed Christian life is the "smart" life.

God is, admittedly demanding, but He gives so much more.

Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of
God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable
unto God, which is your reasonable service.
2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the
renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and
acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

The Christian is the only proof there is for the World as to what is
pleasing to God. We are the ONLY example.

Titus 2:12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts,
we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the
great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all
iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good
works.

Seek ye FIRST the Kingdom of God AND His righteousness

Romans 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but
righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.
18 For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God,
and approved of men.
